Tri-City provided comprehensive electrical and technology services for the renovation and expansion of Black Hawk College’s Building 2, transforming the facility into a modern Career Technologies hub designed to support hands-on technical education and workforce development. The 82,867 sq.ft project included a new precast concrete addition and extensive interior renovations to an existing academic building, creating flexible, high-performance spaces for instruction, labs, and student collaboration.
The new addition features a purpose-built welding lab with advanced welding booths, fabrication and grinding areas, a dedicated gas mixing room, instructional space, and specialized exhaust and ventilation systems to support safe operation of industrial equipment. Renovations to the existing building added multipurpose classrooms, a lecture hall, faculty offices, and specialized labs for mechatronics, cybersecurity, engineering technology, industrial maintenance, and e-sports. The project also included accessibility improvements, a new elevator, upgraded restrooms, a lactation room, and a redesigned entrance lobby that enhances both functionality and architectural presence.
Tri-City delivered complete electrical infrastructure to support the building’s wide range of instructional and laboratory environments, including power distribution, lighting systems, and electrical support for specialized equipment and technology labs. The Technologies team provided fully integrated telecommunications systems throughout the facility, supporting data, voice, and network connectivity across classrooms, offices, and labs. Audio/Visual systems were designed and installed to enhance instruction, presentation, and collaboration in classrooms, lecture spaces, and specialized learning environments. In addition, access control was provided to support campus safety and security. Tri-City Ironworks contributed structural and miscellaneous steel components supporting both the new addition and renovated interior spaces.
Through close coordination with the project team and detailed BIM coordination, The Tri-City Group worked closely with the owners and the construction team to provide a project schedule defining the design, procurement, and construction of the project, along with a detailed execution plan.
