When University of Iowa Health Care set out to expand its capacity as Iowa’s only Level 4 maternal care center, Tri-City Group delivered the electrical and technology infrastructure that made it possible.
The project transformed approximately 30,000 square feet on Level 7 of the John Pappajohn Pavilion into a modern, full-service maternity and postpartum environment — expanding inpatient maternal care from 38 to more than 60 beds. The result is a facility built to meet Iowa’s growing demand for advanced maternal services and equipped to support the thousands of babies delivered on this campus each year.
Electrical & Power Infrastructure – Tri-City Group’s scope encompassed the full electrical build-out of the renovated unit, including a new 2000A busway installation that delivers the redundant power reliability a Level 4 maternal care environment demands. The team also engineered and installed the electrical infrastructure for a new chiller system serving the JPP wing — critical mechanical support built to the performance standards of one of the Midwest’s most complex healthcare facilities.
Executing this work within a fully operational hospital required disciplined phasing and continuous coordination with hospital staff, facilities teams, and construction partners to protect patient care operations at every stage — a challenge Tri-City Group navigated without disruption to the unit.
Structured Cabling & Low-Voltage Systems – The communications and technology scope matched the complexity of the electrical work. Tri-City Group installed a high-performance Cat6A structured cabling infrastructure throughout the renovated space, supporting network connectivity, wireless access points, security systems, and patient television services. Telecommunications rooms were fully built out with equipment racks, overhead cable tray systems, wire management, grounding, and fire-rated pathway protection.
Fiber optic backbone cabling — both single-mode and multi-mode — was installed to support the facility’s demanding network performance requirements. All systems were fully terminated, tested, certified, and labeled to meet healthcare industry standards. The team also coordinated installation of owner-furnished wireless access points and specialized patient security technology tailored to maternity care operations.
Outcome – The renovated Level 7 now features expanded postpartum and antepartum care areas, dedicated exam rooms, enhanced staff workspaces, and family-centered patient environments designed to raise the standard of care for patients, families, and clinical teams alike.
The project was completed on schedule and well under budget — a testament to Tri-City Group’s integrated planning approach, which included a detailed project schedule and execution plan covering design, procurement, and construction from the outset. The outcome: exceptional customer satisfaction and a facility that strengthens UI Health Care’s mission to expand access to the highest level of maternal care across Iowa.
